Blogger’s Quilt Festival: My Entry

This is my entry post for  The Blogger’s Quilt Festival, over at Amy’s Creative Side. I am entering this little baby quilt in the hand-quilting category. While I would not complain if I won some sort of raffle or give-away from sponsors, I am not entering this quilt to be voted on. There will be some masterpieces there, and I imagine that I’ll be hard-pressed in regards to choosing a favorite, not only in the hand-quilting category, but the other categories as well.

I’m entering this quilt for fun and as a hand-quilter, there’s a little story that goes with it :)  In my twenties, I decided to learn to sew, and in the end I decided that what I wanted to focus on was quilting. This was my first hand-quilted quilt. It was pieced and hand-quilted while I was pregnant with my second son.

I quilted little wreaths in each of the white squares.

There was no Internet to refer to back then…you learned by either buying books or magazines or going to the library for books. While my stitches were not perfect, I made them as small and even as I could. I quilted my oldest son’s hand print in the corner, while I stitched away for his soon-to-be little brother.

Years later that new baby grew up to be a man, and presented me with my first grandson. Last spring and summer I worked on a nine patch with lots of white squares in between for hand quilting, and one of the squares had my grandson’s hand in it.  That quilt was a family gift to my son.

I have always enjoyed hand-quilting since I learned about it back then….it’s relaxing. I have machine-quilted pillow covers and a few small items, and I also will tie a quilt if it’s for a child or if I intend to wash it quite frequently and it will get heavy use, but I like to have at least one hand-quilting project going on to pick up and enjoy. There should be some beautiful quilts in this festival…I hope that you can head on over to enjoy them when you have the time :)
