Snow, Snuggling, Playing & Sewing

It’s been such an unusual winter here in Southwestern PA.  Bouts of bitter cold, then springlike breaks in the 50 degree range here and there. More rain than snow. This past week we went from an unusual February high of 60 degrees one day, to this, two days later…

( around 5 a.m. several hours prior to dawn, taken with no flash )

If you live in a snowy climate you are familiar with this; if not…even when it is dark outside, with cloud cover and no moonlight, the snow brings the light and it is possible to get photos like this with no tripod ( which I do not have )  or any special equipment or lenses.

We got a good six inches overnight. I shoveled all of the walkways, cleared the car, etc. Later on we had squalls and it was all covered again. In the late afternoon when things had settled a bit I took a walk down to see the kids and Merle…Merle has loved the snow since he was a young puppy. He was just reveling in it. Running around burying his face in it / sliding through it / excited when we threw snow at him…

Here, the older animals are happy with shorter visits outdoors and longer snuggling times indoors.

The day after that I had to pick Brent up at his school and meet the other kids when they got off their bus. I took my camera along that time.

Indoors, the children were enjoying some Paddle Balls. At .99 each, I had hoped that they’d last at least 5 minutes. Aiselyn was the best at it….hers going a mile a minute and making Merles’ head spin. I think that hers died within 4 minutes or less.

As to sewing, the Rainbow Scrap Challenge color of the month is teal / aquamarine, seafoam…whatever we can come up with. I finished appliqueing an Airship Propeller block for that.

Awhile back, I had mentioned discovering Acorn TV  ( HERE ) which has a lot of quality programming and many of you commented and mentioned that you had been enjoying “The Crown” on Netflix.

I know that my son and DIL have Netflix and I asked her if she’d watched this series. She raved about it. On Saturday morning I thought to start a free trial and watch one episode of “The Crown”.

FOUR episodes later I came out of my engrossed stupor and discovered that we were going up to 60 degrees, most of the snow was rapidly melting, and that I had better do something with the rest of my day :)   Later on down at the kids’ house I watched my son giving poor Merle a bath….snow is much easier on him than mud :)

I watched part of the Crown but never finished it – guess I’m not that much into the royals although I do like hearing about them in the news now and then. I have been hearing on the news of all the snow out and I do feel for y’all! today it was 80 here and I had sandals, capris and short sleeve shirt on :) sorry to rub it in LOL – but on Tuesday it will drop to the high 40’s again and 30’s at night! back and forth we go here too – looks like the kids are having fun in the snow – before you know spring will be with all of us.

Those are great pictures of the snow, the kids, and the pupster. lol I haven’t seen those paddle ball things in years! I used to love them when I was a kid-but was NOT very good at it.

Our weather has been all over the board, too. We are mid 30s here today (a heat wave for us this time of year) BUT the winds are at least 30MPH coming off the bay so it is COLD.

Love your applique block. Hope you have a great Sunday…xo Diana

ps-We got hooked on The Crown, too, and have now watched all the episodes and can’t wait for more…

Sixty five degrees here on Wednesday, ten inches of snow on Thursday. No school then and on Friday. The kids were thrilled!

What fun! I turned my A/C on day before yesterday here in Texas. I’m hot….wouldn’t mind a little snow.

Those pictures of your neighborhood in that lighting look so eerie – like a scene from a differnt planet! Cool!
My cats snuggle up on the dog for selfish purposes – a warm body when it’s chilly in the house!
I bought the mini version of those Dollar Tree paddle balls for my grandkids. Like you, I don’t expect them to last more than 5 minutes! Just got them for the cuteness factor!

Loved the pictures of the snow at night. Sometimes I wake up at night and go to the window because there is so much light coming through the curtains. I figure, “it must be a full moon.” But it seldom is, it’s just the lights of the big city reflecting off of the snow and cloud cover. So amazing!

I always enjoy your photos and I enjoyed the Crown as well. It’s nice to find something worthwhile do to watch on TV while trying to do some handwork.

  9. Margie Miller says:

It was 81 degrees here in Kansas over the weekend and this year so far, we have had no snow. We need moisture!

  12. Eileen says:

Hello Deb, cute shots of the dog and cat snuggling. Pretty snowy scenes, I am sure the grandkids and the dogs love the snow. Have a happy day and week ahead!

  13. It is easy to get carried away with a Netflix bin watching session. Glad that you found some sewing time though, your applique looks great.

  14. I love watching the Crown too! I tried not to watch the episodes back to back so I could spread out the enjoyment :) Can’t wait for another season of it!

  15. Enjoyed the photos of your grandkids and Merle having fun! we have that light phenomenon here when it snows, too, but no snow for us in awhile in Colorado either. Like in Kansas, we’re needing moisture! Happy stitching!

  16. Sheila says:

We don’t get as much snow here in NC as you, but when it does snow, one can easily see at night as the snow reflects the light. So cool.
    Enjoyed all your pictures.

  17. Great photos, love seeing kids and dog in the snow. Once we had a cat who loved to go walking in the snow with us. Very pretty block.

  18. Very pretty fabrics in your Airship Propeller block.

  19. Deb says:

I watched most of the crown (hubby watched a few without me!). Love the photo’s of the snow at night… I miss that.

  20. Pam Arbour says:

Loved all the pics and the propeller block. Stay warm!

  21. Claudia W says:

This is my first time living in a place that gets snow. (If you could call it that!) We don’t get much, but I was surprised to learn that even at midnight the snow makes it light outside. I was a little confused, but thought it was pretty nifty. I’m learning so much about new to me natural wonders here!
I love the fabrics you used for your Airship Propeller. So cute!!!
I used to have a dog who loved the snow. My dog’s now just think it’s a big nuisance. I like it, now; but probably because it’s new…

  22. gayle says:

We got 6″ of snow the day before yesterday, then today was in the mid-60’s. The mud just sucks the shoes right off my feet…

  23. Sally T says:

I’m just south of you in central VA and we’ve only gotten a dusting this year. We’re heading to the mid 70s today. I’m a bit worried that I’m missing spring planting.

  24. Jeanne says:

    I like your aqua Propeller!

  25. Kate says:

We’ve had not snow this winter and thankfully no ice storms which are more common here than snow. Your Propeller block is very pretty, it has a southwest feel to it.

  26. Susan says:

And this was only a couple of weeks ago! Amazing, isn’t it? That propeller block is great!
