When Other Presidents Visited the UK and the Queen Over the Years

First of all I have to say that I am an avid fan of the series “The Crown” and have watched it at least two times now.

I know that every little thing is not historically correct but it does give one a feel for the monarchy and their rules and what they go through to be the monarchy and retain their lifestyle….

And aside from that and the fascination and love that most of us had back in the day for Princess Diana, and recently watching the wedding of Prince Harry to  Meghan Markle I don’t pay too much attention to the royals.

But with Trump’s visit to the UK and the immense displeasure of their people for having him there and the protests I researched a bit.

That was President Jimmy Carter visiting Newcastle with a crowd of 20,000 cheering him on.

“When JFK came in 1961, half a million people lined the route between London airport and the west end to catch a glimpse of him and his wife Jackie Kennedy.”

“US presidents also enjoyed a warm relationship with the Royal Family. Eisenhower was a particular favourite of the Queen, who invited him to stay at Balmoral – the only president to do so.”

“Ronald Reagan also got on well with the Queen, who in 1982 personally invited him to stay at Windsor Castle and go for a ride in the Great Park.

And they rode horses together:

In 1994, Bill and Hillary Clinton were honored with a sleepover on board the royal yacht Britannia in Portsmouth.”

George Bush spent the night at Buckingham Palace.

President Barack Obama and the Queen:

All of these presidents were welcomed fairly warmly, had State Dinners, etc.

What a contrast this week has been. And it is worth noting.  MASSIVE protests across the UK and Scotland. They don’t approve of this president Trump and what he stands for and says and does.

But I wanted to find some photos of when she was younger…

That same beautiful welcoming smile was extended to President Trump and Melania today at age 92 : )

just a few people protesting huh – but overall the people like him — in his dreams!

  2. Oh the memories in those previous photos…I am old enough to well remember President and Mrs. Eisenhower – I grew up in the DC/Virginia area and my Dad was in the US Navy Band – they performed at all the inaugurations. We may not have always agreed with earlier administrations but the respect was there. Not any more…:-(

  3. What an interesting post, Deb! I am with the British people – I don’t approve of the current president either, or what he says or does. Ugh…

  4. Melody Anderson says:

There are plenty of us Americans that don’t approve of him either or how he got in office. He is a disgrace diplomatically as a president representing our country on the international scene and cares very little for most of us NON mega rich Americans, many of whom put him in office.

Melody after seeing what when on in Helsinki today I am blown away and agree. I’d hoped for better

  5. Eileen says:

I saw the crowd of protesters in London. The people of England do not like T.rump. I have to agree with them, he is the worst president ever. Very rude, a bully and a liar. I am surprised the Queen even wanted to meet him. He owes Russia for winning the election and now he has to pay the piper P.utin.
Sorry for the rant, I hope you have a great weekend.

  6. Margie Miller says:

I agree with the rest of you about Trump. …especially Eileen. And she forgot to mention that he is also a predator.

  7. Joyce says:

The queen looks terrific for age 92! What a classy lady!
Seeing these photos from the past brings home the fact that some presidents may not have had our approval personally, but never did we have to cringe at the way they represented our country at home or abroad. They all respected the office and we respected the way they conducted themselves in it.
I agree with every single one of your commenters about the sad current state of affairs.

  8. Deb says:

So true Joyce! I’m looking forward to having a president that is able to read and understand the constitution he is sworn to uphold. I personally think all those elected officials in Washington need to go back to kindergarten and learn some key things.

  9. Chris K in Wisconsin says:

What a total embarrassment this trip has been. Probably just dreaming of his time alone with Putin coming up. We never had the onslaught of “fake news” until we had a fake president. (the small ‘p’ is absolutely on purpose). Trust in Mueller is what we must keep for now.

    • debralynnpugh says:

Chris I agree. There WAS a lot of Fake News going around on Social Media during the 2016 election ( Hillary was dead/ here was her body double ) That sort of thing….

Trump seized on it and convinced a good part of his base that genuine news sites were also “Fake” / and many are still falling for it

    • debralynnpugh says:

Chris with what is going on anymore I think that ” trust in Mueller” is about all that we HAVE to trust in right now :(

  10. KitsyKeelSmith says:

    AMEN to every comment.

  11. Ann says:

Thanks for reminding us how all our Presidents behaved formerly. I so agree with all your previous commenters.
An embarrassing, un-read liar with no concern to anyone but himself and (some of) his family.

  12. Joy McDonald says:

Such an interesting post with photos of memories gone by! You are so right, the Queen still has that beautiful smile :) xx

  13. Debra says:

I appreciate you writing this post. Once before you stepped lightly into this mess we find ourselves in and a few commentors weren’t very kind. I meant to comment then and got busy and it slipped my mind.
I didn’t want that to happen again.
I agree with all of your replies this far.
This president, and the disaster of his administration saddens, angers & scares me more and more every day.

    • debralynnpugh says:

Thank you Debra for your feedback :) For the most part in the post I just wanted to focus on the Queen but then after he avoided protocol and walked in front of her, tweeted against the EU and then our country prior to meeting with Putin and what went on there I am blown away :) I agree with the Traitor / Treason headlines that I see everywhere. I have thought that for a long while now : (

  14. mary says:

I agree with all the replies so far. I came out of my chair when he walked in front of Britain’s beautiful Queen Elizabeth in front of the guard! What an idiot. He is so disgusting. Thanks for being hosnest and also for providing these great old photos.

  15. barb says:

They are the epitome of class and grace……..the turmps are the opposite. Shameful he kept her waiting and walked in front her…..such an embarrassment for America to have him represent us…..

  16. helen says:

and throughout it all the Queen always keeps smiling, though I am sure she found it difficult this time. It is obvious though, how much she enjoyed some of the previous visits
