Hobbling around due to the dog toy made for bears

My youngest has a pit and my middle son has a rottweiler-lab mix. Koopa the pit can kill a toy so quickly that it is amazing and it gets rather expensive. A few weeks back the boys’ dad bought Koopa and Merle each a large pink ball with a handle. It was made for horses so he thought it might last. Merle still has his. Koopas’ lasted a day or less.

This past Tuesday my youngest brought Koopa to play in the yard with a new toy that Nate thought might be hardier as he said it was made for bears. I thought he was joking…a big ball with rope on either end. Koopa had it out in the yard and I went to play and turned too fast or something when he still had the rope on his end and the rope sliced through my calf. It was heavy nylon…not the kind usually found in dog toys.

Very bad laceration. Much blood / very deep…started treating it at home up in the bathroom just pouring water on it…Nate ran for peroxide spray….after 5 minutes or so the DIL came with gauze, etc. and we headed to Med Express.

The doctor there would have preferred to send me on to the hospital but I put my foot down. I was there to stay. Well, she was concerned…this was through all the fatty layers and so close to a tendon and yet sew me up she did. She was muttering about how bad this was and she’d have to use mattress stitches. The wound was the size of my palm or larger.

Well I sew! What’s a mattress stitch? Do YOU sew, Doc? And off we went…with her explaining how it was easier to sew skin than clothes, except for MY situation where she was having troubles :) In the end I had my DIL take a photo with her phone to pass up to me so I could see what a mattress stitch looked like.

I had 19 of them! Don’t worry…I am not showing that photo! Gross!  :)

Tetanus shot, antibiotics…elevate the leg, use crutches or hobble only a wee bit. I am used to sitting at the table or in a chair, feet down, when I sew. I could see that sewing wasn’t going to be in the picture for days on end. And not much else. I am not in a lot of pain. If working through pain was the issue it wouldn’t be too bad….it’s the fact that if I blow it and this gets infected or pulls apart then I’d need to see a surgeon.

SO aside from a wee bit of computer time, hobbling to the kitchen to let the dogs out or get a little food….I am not doing much but reading and working my way through “Reign” on Netflix. The DIL has a medical background and she’s changing the dressings for the first few days …that doctor had me terrified about infection, swelling, surgery, premature death, the end of the world, lol…:)

The family is doing dog-poo patrol, carrying laundry baskets, bringing Dairy Queen Rocky Road, lots of pictures and hugs from the little kids, etc. Some sweeping and other things will get done over the weekend. Drives me crazy…I am usually the one to do for them :)

A bit of a blogging break here for awhile until I get back in to the swing of things…:)

  2. Karen says:

you are so lucky it wasn’t worse – probably should have went to the ER – and you have a two story house – not good when you have to be going up steps just to use the bathroom – be careful – get some books read and follow the doctors instructions! well be thinking of you.

  3. Eileen says:

Oh my, so sorry you were hurt. I hope your stitches heal and pray for a quick recovery. I think it is a good idea to relax and take good care of your wound.

    Have a happy weekend.

  4. Joyce says:

Oh no, I just feel so bad. Reading this was surreal since you are always the “busy bee” making soup, watching kids, baking cookies, helping with homework…..I’ve added your recovery to my list of prayer intentions. That’s all I can do, I guess, besides just being glad you’re surrounded with people who will take good care of you because they’ve learned from the best how it’s done!

  5. barb says:

  9. Bernie says:

Oh Deb, what a scary accident this must have been. Sounds like you will need some time to heal. I am so sorry this happened. Maybe you can work on hand quilting? Have the kids bring your supplies over to the sofa.

Take care of yourself and I hope you are up and around again soon,

  10. Jan says:

Ouch! please take care of yourself, and get back to your old antics soon. I’ll miss you!

  11. Chris K in Wisconsin says:

You have raised your family with the belief that “you do for family”, so it is now your turn, for a bit, to be the recipient. It is always harder to be the patient than the angel. But you know you MUST stay off of it and put yourself first right now. As they say on the plane, when the mask comes down, always use it for yourself first, so you can help others afterwards.

So let yourself be pampered for a while. It will allow all of them to show you how much they love you. You can’t deny them THAT!! Take care of yourself!!

  12. FlowerLady says:

Oh Deb ~ I pray your wound will heal nicely and quickly. How scary that must have been.

I agree with another commenter, there must be some hand quilting you could work on while you keep your leg up.

Love, hugs and prayers ~ FlowerLady

  13. Kim says:

OMGosh! That sounds really bad. So glad you DIL is keeping an eye on it.

Excellent time to read. Now after reading your post, I want Dairy Queen…giggle.

    Take care of yourself.

  15. Well now this is quite a post and definitely not one that all of us wanted to read. Glad you are ‘sewed’ up and on the mend, but that was quite an experience. I had to go see what ‘mattress stitch’ is and now I need a stiff drink to try and not see the visual. Glad you are at least home and recuperating. You take care, and keep us posted on how you’re feeling.

  16. Susan says:

That sounds HORRIBLE! I’m glad it is healing okay, but oh, wow! And how is Koopa? Still merrily destroying the bear toy, or is it gone already? I’m so sorry you have to experience this and can’t sew! I hope you can at least hand quilt.

  17. Wow! Painful….Prayer for fast healing! Was Koopa sad over your injury? Take care!

  18. I got queesy just thinking about this Deb. So sorry this happened. You’re a trouper (I wouldn’t have gone to the hospital either).

Deb, what a thing to happen. I’m so sorry! It sounds as if it would be very painful. Just the logistics of getting around must take so much time and effort. I’ll be praying for it to heal properly. Thank goodness for family who live close enough to help!

  22. So sorry to hear about your injury, Deb! It’s hard sitting around and not doing much when these things happen, but that’s probably the only way to heal. It sounds like your family is taking good care of you! Sending good thoughts your way!

  23. Doreen JOHNSON says:

Oh man Deb!!!! That SUCKS!!! I kept winching my eyes as I read…afraid you were going to show your cut. LOL!! I’m such a wimp! LOL!! Jackson tears toys up too…..as a treat he gets a bone marrow…good for the teeth and gets his chewing out. You can get them at the deli at your local grocery store. Rest and enjoy that yummy Rocky Road.

  26. Sweet Marie says:

oh my gosh this is awful! I’m so glad you have family close by. we have the same dog toy issues with our Rambo, lab and german shepard, 102 lbs and Rocket, boxer, pit and lab mix, 53 lbs.. when my grandma or parents are here I very much worry about them tripping or the dogs knocking them over by accident from their excitement.
    I hope you heal quickly!
    hugs,
    Marie

  27. Raewyn says:

OH dear, I’m sorry to hear about your injury…. I hope you heal quickly and well, with no infections or other troubles.

  28. wow. You just never know when these crazy serious injuries will occur. I’m so glad you have a DIL around who has a medical degree! You are smart to just sit it out for awhile to let your injury heal. Many people do not wait it out and pay for it later. I enjoy your posts very much so hope you are back to normal soon. Take care mary in Az

  29. Dawn says:

    Oh, ouch!!
Hope it’s getting better by the day. Good you have family close.
