Veterans & War Heroes

My son is a vet and served in the Iraq War. Every day I worried that he would be killed and many on his team were. My grandson is named after one of them.

I am not sure how I’d hold up if I found out that he was captured and held and undergoing torture.  I knew that John McCain had been tortured but not until his death did I read the full story of what that man went through.

It is NOT an easy read but if you have not read it before and can bear it : John McCain, Prisoner of War: A First-Person Account.

Of course we all know that John went on to serve his country as a Senator but this post is about him as a Vet.

I was dismayed when Trump said that McCain was a hero because he was captured….but Trump liked people that were not captured. He’d never served, yet he said that while campaigning.  He was disparaging every POW in that blase statement.

Trump and McCain have had their differences since then.

I can understand why McCain might not have wished that Trump attend his funeral and that Trump may have not wished to, either.

But as the sitting President of the United States of America, to display the petty vindictiveness since McCain’s death is abhorrent.

To ignore the crafted statement of your staff and simply tweet a two-line ‘thoughts and prayers’ kind of thing was one thing. ( and obviously they didn’t want to be associated with that and leaked the story that they HAD created such a statement )

But just when I thought he couldn’t reach another low, I woke up to the news that the flag was back at full staff.

Along with many other rebukes, later in the day the American Legion weighed in.

“On behalf of the American Legion’s two million wartime veterans, I strongly urge you to make an appropriate presidential proclamation noting Senator McCain’s death and legacy of service to our nation, and that our nation’s flag be half-staffed throughout his internment,” Denise Rohan, the national commander of the American Legion, said in a statement.

And then this quote from a longer statement by AMVETS:

Amen.

The fact that a sitting president should have to be rebuked in such a manner is just amazing. Every day it is a new low. Thankfully his staff sent him to ‘time-out’ in a corner, released a statement that they wrote, and lowered the flag again after these VETS weighed in.

Last week I thought that I saw ‘history-in-the-making” ( Manofort guilty, Cohen plea, people granted immunity etc. )   This was sadly even worse.

I know that some people feel that blogs should ignore this sort of stuff but it is hard to.  I see history happening and it is worth recording.  As Trump often says ” SAD”

The Opioid Crisis in America and my Family

Every once in a blue moon I mention something about the current politics on this blog and there are always a few people that freak out as if no blogs should ever reference anything going on in the real world.

Well there is more going on in the real world aside from President Trump and his escapades. And this post is for the families that have gone through it or are currently going through it or know someone that is. And that is the opioid crisis that is gripping our nation.

For a background to this real-world post I will send you to this link http://www.frugallittlebungalow.com/slice-life-fun-serious-troubles-well/

And then I will tell you that this past time ( via the link ) despite your hopes and prayers along with everyone else that it was NOT successful and he did NOT complete his program and that he DID continue on with the drugs.

He lied to us…told us that he was kicked out of his room for smoking there…and we believed it. He lied about a lot of other things that we either fell for or had suspicions about.

In the end he hit rock bottom…no money, desperate to get out of the cycle and went to rehab for the full four weeks and completed the program.

He’s not coming HERE nor to his brothers’ house since he betrayed us. He had to find a solution…halfway house / another friend to take him in etc. We have all worked together on this with a few friends and came up with a ‘tough love’ solution.

I think that it is going to work out this time and my message to any of you that have friends or family or neighbors going through something like this is that they have to really WANT it and he finally does.

So don’t stop hoping / praying.  Always hope and pray, pray, pray :)

And I will tell you that the first time that I became aware of this crisis was a few years back.  A NURSE !!  A nurse from a good family overdosed and died. I was shocked and dismayed. I did not realize that it could happen to anyone / any family.

I hope that being honest about this will help someone :)

Meanwhile I’ve got Koopa his dog and will probably have to have him for quite awhile :)

I’ll not go in to the hassles of that but just post a favorite picture of him from a few years back :
