Back to School Humor & Some Sewing

With a few days of cooler weather, I caught up on some yard work…the grass was so thick from all of the recent rains and we had that sideways-growing grass that shows up at this time of year.

Don’t catch it in time and it sprouts little seed heads…I have always called it “Twitch Grass” and I Googled that.  The technical name is Couch Grass. Well the entire neighborhood had it springing up everywhere within the last week. Most of our yards are back in control which we accomplished in the space of the milder temperatures.

I have 5 grands ; 2 school districts. Brent and Kate started back to school on two of the days where it was nice and cool in the morning and it truly felt like ‘back to school weather’. They were with their mama on the morning of Day One, and overnight at my son’s house after school. The DIL posed them for some nice Day Two morning photos. I just took them and put them side by side.

These are the typical photos that all of the friends and family were posting on Facebook this week when their children were heading back to school; listing name, age or grade.  Very nice to see but I told my DIL I wanted to do something funny on Javis, Aiselyn and Mya’s first day.

So while we did take some normal, serious pictures like this….

We also did several with some Back to School Humor….I am showing her favorite one here. When she shared this with their friends, it was a big hit.

The cool weather is history. It’s back to a wall of heat outdoors ( and upstairs here ) and some sewing under the ceiling fan with the window A/C blasting from across the room again!

  •  I have added a few more berries and leaves to the Floral Basket
  • Made my way down another row of spools and am catching up on the cable portion now of the Stars and Spools quilt.
  • Stems and leaves sewn down on another applique block ; just need to prep the flowers now.

collage quilting and applique

The little applique block will be my 5th one and there’s a backstory to this.

Back in 2014, Audrey over at Quilty Folk had challenged any readers that were interested to start on an Eagle Quilt that we’d hopefully complete by July 4th of the next year. ( or at least we’d have the top done )

Well some of us went looking around at Eagle Quilts and patterns…this was not a sew-along with any particular one ; just do what you liked.

In the end, after looking at more Eagle quilts than I could count, on Pinterest, etc., I settled on this one and ordered it : Elizabeth’s Pride by Lori Smith.

I did not pay much attention when I was ordering it; discovered that the original was made in wools !   Well, I made a few of the floral blocks and a variation of the eagle and then it morphed into a sampler quilt to present at as Christmas gift to my son and DIL.

I’d never done anything like this before…it was like making your own jigsaw puzzle, albeit a simple one :) I am not as talented as many of the quilters out there whose blogs I visit and who inspire me so much, but this is just a journey for me and this was part of it.

It ended up as a tribute quilt; names were embroidered of fallen comrades in Iraq and a baby that she’d lost.  I dug up some old photos and made a collage for this post….some photos are from October of that year when it was almost done prior to adding a border. Some are from December when I had finished tying it.

So here I am back to the original Elizabeth’s Pride pattern and I’ll follow it this time :)

I think you made better use of the eagle quilt than as intended in wool. Nice combination of applique and piecing. And the tribute part makes it really special!

The first two photos are darling but the third one is not only funny but probably so much truer to real feelings for most families!

  14. I was working outside yesterday morning for a couple of hours – 76 degrees and 79% humidity. It was like a swamp. :-) Love the school photos and Brent’s haircut.

  15. Robin says:

Nice pictures of your grandchildren. It’s so important to mark the big days with a picture. I love the way you made your eagle quilt so personal. It turned out so nice. Your progress on the spool quilt is great, it feels like a long time when you’re actually stitching but it’s just a moment compared to the time spent enjoying the finished quilt. I just took one off the frames that I’ve been working on since May. It still needs the binding but it feels so good to be close to the end.

  16. Debbie says:

That’s a great photo of a funny back to school – love it!!
