Slice of Life : Later in August Randoms

A slice of life from later in August ( compared to the earlier one HERE :)

I was quite surprised to find out that the grandchildren were starting back to school this week and not the next. When I was young we went after Labor Day. When my boys were young they might start a day or two prior to the holiday. This year it seems that the kids are starting quite early. Brent and Kate started in their school district on Monday and the other three start on Thursday.

Here’s Lily looking a bit fed up with one of the recent heat waves that we’d been having.  “Look at me; I have too much hair for this humidity!

On another hot day, August 20th, there were two things going on. My DIL’s little niece Gracie was turning one, and I’d committed to attending the party weeks before.  I set out for the party held at a local park and the temperature was 87 degrees in the shade at the time and climbing.

My son and DIL and family had to sit in the hot sun for a football game rather than attending the party, but doesn’t Javis look tough and mean and ready for it in this picture ? ( courtesty of DIL / FB )

They won their game :)

The party that I attended was held at a local park. We gathered at some picnic tables in a nicely shaded area. Close by was a playground for the older children, and across from us was an historic log house. Of course we went up there for pictures.

It was a nice location. Gracie’s parents had streamers and balloons hung on the trees surrounding the picnic tables and as hot as it was, we were shielded from the sun.

Here is a view of my Hyacinth Bean Vine from the front porch and some pretty skies on the evening of August 21 : ( one is a reflection in  puddle from recent rains )

I forgot that I’d planted nasturtiums last year or that they come back, but am pleased to see them blooming so happily along with the other blooms. The yellow rose bush is blooming again with the russian sage encroaching upon it and needing tamed….

With a break from the heat, one of the day lilies on the side of the house began to bloom again, as she often does later in the summer….it’s such a treat to see her do this :)  I imagine her saying that “I know I’m a June flower but I have a bit more in me that wants to shine before winter!”

Wishing you a happy week :)

Wrapping Some Quilt Projects Up

I decided that wrapping some quilt projects up might contribute to my peace of mind. I did two of them on the 19th and another on the 21st.

  • The gradient quilt….just something that I was goofing around with in the winter, had sat and waited for a thin border for ages. I finally sewed it on. It will be a tied quilt in the end.    I have some skulls & roses fabric and black fabric to do something with for the back at some point.  ( it will be for my youngest son . )
  • I decided to keep Scrappy Granny at this current size and also added a thin border to her.   I’ll add another thicker border at the end so as to make it easier to quilt the edges when it comes time to put her into the hoop for hand quilting.
  • In mid-August as I was sewing a diamond on to the second 1857 Album block for the month,  it occurred to me that I was quite tired of the project at this point. I made two more blocks after that, added a dark green border, and this will be a couch quilt size.  It is dragging on the ground ; measures 47 x 78.

I will continue to download the free blocks provided by Gay at Sentimental Stitches each month. It’s a lovely project and has been a learning experience.  If I continue on with it later on in regards to the new blocks, I’ll  do so in a different color scheme.

While I do intend to get back to  ‘Isabel and Benjamin’ at some point, I don’t want to sew anything red & green for awhile.  Applique going forward will be more leaves and berries on the Floral Basket as well as working on more blocks for Elizabeth’s Pride.

I thought that I had four of them done.

When I took a photo I realized that one required a center circle yet!

Alright, there’s a circle for that ready to prep, along with the elements for the next block.

Yesterday was close to 90 degrees and I had to be outside in it for a birthday party….today it is cooler but still quite humid. Since we had rain in the morning, tomorrow is the day that I plan to catch up with grass mowing…it should be nice and less humid by the late afternoon.  Hope so, anyway !
