Scrappy Saturday / Slow Sunday ( Stitching and Hand Quilting )

I did work a bit on my latest red & green applique block last Sunday, but then it dawned on me that I had more orange peels to applique for the Rainbow Scrap Challenge this month. About 2 weeks ago, my hands were really bothering me, between applique and trimming bushes outside. I thought to start to machine-applique the peels and save the hand work for flowers and stems and those sort of projects.  I did two peels that way…with an overcast stitch…my first at machine applique.

Then I forgot all about it until a few days ago…I had six more peels to prep and sew, and I returned to hand applique for them.

I also finally got to the HST blocks…so there are 3 HST’s and 2 orange peel blocks to round out the rest of my September brown blocks for the RSC15 Challenge.  I think the colors are a bit off on them….I might have had the flash on by mistake. As to the red & green, here’s where I am so far…I need to pick some more cherries….or maybe I can use crabapples from my tree :)

The red & green applique is a Benjamin Biggs quilt block and there are little rosebuds to go in each corner yet. I joined the Take 2 / Benjamin Biggs project and did the first three blocks and then quilted them into a table runner. Periodically I’d remember to download the latest ones at the beginning of each month, so I have a few to use in this quilt.

As to Slow Stitching on Sunday, I won’t be doing any applique. The next Shenandoah Valley Botanical Album quilt block will be announced, and there will be a bit of prep work to do, and since most of the blocks have a lot of leaves, that might take awhile. However I will be doing some hand quilting….I am a little burnt out on applique so focusing on the quilt will be just the right thing to do.

I quilted motifs down the centers, and then I marked a 2 inch crosshatch on one of the four large blocks. I may do a closer crosshatch down the line but I decided to start with the 2 inch because between that and outlining the applique and much of the applique needing quilting itself, such as this basket, I did not want to get confused.  The blocks are quite big…2 inch might just be enough…

Certainly still in a Work In Progress stage here :)

Three on Thursday: Hunter’s Moon, Halloween Kids & Pets

Slice of Life / Three on a Thursday :

1 )    On Monday, I had an email notice from EarthSky.org saying “ Tonight – October 26, 2015 – if you’re in the Northern Hemisphere, start watching for the full Hunter’s Moon. Full moon comes on October 27 at 12:05 UTC. At United States time zones, that places the time of the full moon in the morning hours on October 27, at 8:05 a.m. EDT, 7:05 a.m. CDT, 6:05 a.m. MDT or 5:05 a.m. PDT. Thus the October 26 moon – for us in the U.S. – will be just as close to full as the moon you’ll see ascending over the horizon on the evening of October 27”

So that evening I watched for it and the minute it appeared I took my camera up the street for a few shots which is good, because clouds and rain were rolling in for the actual full moon on Tuesday evening, with several days of rain to follow.

2)    My DIL took a picture of the grands ( one was somewhere else that day ) prior to going to a Halloween party last weekend…I borrowed it for here and just cropped it a bit. They went to an old-fashioned party as in the kids were bobbing for apples! :)  Someone posted a video of that on Facebook later on and it was very amusing. I only remember doing that once, at a church party, when I was little.

3)    I have two dogs and a cat. Jugsy and Kanga are either playing or chilling together. Kanga doesn’t bother with Lily the female dog, but Lily was an addition when the neighbors moved so perhaps that is why. Usually when they cuddle up if I get the camera out they break it up but this time I was able to get a few shots.

Meanwhile as to Lily, here’s an older photo of her enjoying a fall day; she’s a blur, running around the yard in the brisk weather.
